Prayer & Dining

Here are some important prayer locations, Halal dining recommendations, housing information, and other useful resources.

Prayer Spaces

018 Champlin Hall

Brown Muslim Students' Center (BMSC)

The BMSC is a large space where Muslim students can come to pray, read Qur'an, access Islamic texts, study, and socialize. It has a small wudu station and kitchen for cooking halal food. To gain swipe access to the space, students must contact the BMSA.

201 Thayer St

Sciences Library

This small prayer room is located on the 12th floor of the Sciences Library. To use the space, students must request a key from the service desk on Level A.

69 Brown St

Page-Robinson Hall 

This small prayer room is located at Room 412 on the 4th floor of Page-Robinson Hall. There is no process necessary to access the space.

103 Thayer St

New Dorm

This prayer room is located at New Dorm just inside the Vartan Gregorian Quad. To gain swipe access to the space, students must e-mail philip_torphy@brown.edu.

222 Richmond St

Alpert Medical School

This prayer room is inside the fitness center on the 4th floor of the Alpert Medical School, a few minutes away from Brown's main campus.

Note: This space is only available for the use of medical students.

121 South Main St

Public Health Building

This prayer room is located at Room 243B in the Public Health Building.

Halal Dining

144 Thayer St; 135 Cushing St

Brown University Dining Halls

All non-breaded chicken is Zabiha Halal at all of Brown's dining halls. Occasionally, other Zabiha Halal meats are served as well, as designated on the menus of each individual dining hall.

288 Thayer St

Mike's Calzones

Mike's is a local restaurant on Thayer St. that serves wraps, sandwiches, and calzones. 

Note: Only the chicken shawarma and lamb gyro are Zabiha Halal.

833 Hope St

Not Just Snacks

NJS is a Zabiha Halal restaurant serving South Asian cuisine. It is located just a few minutes away from campus down Hope St. And its sister grocery store, Not Just Spices, is located just across the street!

183 Angell St

Tribos Peri Peri

Tribos is a Portuguese-inspired restaurant just off of Thayer St. that serves Zabiha Halal peri peri grilled dishes such as chicken, falafel, lamb chops, and their signature Tribos Beef Burger. 

225 Thayer St

Abu Yarub Al-Shami

Abu Yarub is a restaurant on Thayer St. that serves all Zabiha Halal Middle Eastern food. Their dishes range from shawarma wraps, falafel wraps, and tabouleh, to sweets like baklava and knafeh.

333 Wickenden St

Jahunger

Jahunger is a Uyghur restaurant on Wickenden St. serving Zabiha Halal classic Uyghur and northwestern Chinese cuisine. Some of their dishes include spiced chicken stew, kavaap lamb skewers, hand-pulled laghman noodles and polo, a slow-cooked carrot, lamb, raisin and rice dish. Their only non-Halal dish is the Ding Ding Noodles.

Accommodations

Religious Housing Accommodations

Brown University Residential Life provides religious housing accommodations for students who need it. Accommodations for Muslim students range from rooms with semi-private bathrooms to suites with private bathrooms and kitchens for upperclassmen. Students will be given the option to submit an accommodation form through Residential Life before the Housing Lottery each year.
